Model Five
Floorstanding Speaker

The KLH Model 5 is the new shape of sound. This legendary, sought-after speaker is our best floorstanding speaker, entirely dedicated to acoustic performance. Our new, iconic version of this late 1960s original roots directly from the heart of KLH, honoring the acoustic suspension design principles made famous by KLH founder Henry Kloss. Our evolved Model Five gives music lovers the luxury of filling their living space with the sound and aesthetic they’ve been searching for. Standing strong on a 5-degree slant riser base, the speaker’s upward angular stance ensures the sound is always directed accurately toward the listener.

The Model Five’s “Old-World Linen” textured grille cloth complements the rich finish of the genuine mahogany veneer, giving this loudspeaker a mid-century modern look that stops you in your tracks. Our other grille option, the “Stone Wash Linen” grille, magnifies the rich finish of the English Walnut Model Five. We give you the option to buy the color you’re without for $199.99/pair. Not only is this remarkable floorstanding loudspeaker made with sustainable materials and packaging, it never fails to leave a jaw-dropping impact with its high-fidelity sound. This speaker will wake up your listening space and articulate high-quality sound from anywhere in the room! Welcome to a new era of sound, audiophiles!

Some Model Five FAQ's

The Model Five vintage loudspeaker is designed around two guiding principles that perfect its sound quality. The first principle is the acoustic suspension design. Unlike bass-reflex systems, the acoustic suspension design is not optimized to favor one frequency band at the expense of another. The volume of the air in the enclosure ensures that the 10-inch woofer will always be in control, and the low-frequency performance will remain clean even at the highest cone excursions. Secondly, the dedicated midrange driver is specifically designed to reproduce the important, middle part of the audio spectrum- the area where the ear is the most sensitive and where distortion is most easily heard. This guarantees the output is clean and detailed at all levels.

It all comes down to the Model Five’s acoustic suspension design. Acoustic suspension speakers are much better suited to deal with low-frequency program material than any other loudspeaker design. This is particularly true when listening to contemporary music. Today’s recording technology has become so advanced that artists are constantly finding new ways to use the frequency band below 40Hz. This was not the case 20 years ago. As technology has evolved, it is becoming apparent that traditional bass-reflex speakers have problems with detail and accuracy in this regard.

One of my favorite things about the Model Five floor-standing speaker is its elegant simplicity. There are five major acoustic components in this vintage speaker, and they were each developed with the intent of reaching the highest performance quality possible- without breaking the bank. We knew the level of performance we wanted to achieve from the start, so in the engineering realm, it was easy to map out the product design and quality that was necessary to reach those objectives. We did not spend money where it was not needed. Instead, we focused on the individual components and specifications required to build this groundbreaking floor standing speaker.

Dating back to the 1950s, there has always been a desire for low-bass extension from a small enclosure. Back then, one of the best ways to achieve this output of sound was through the acoustic suspension design. This design principle turned KLH into a dominant solution in the loudspeaker industry for decades. The vintage Model Five was then introduced in the mid-60s when high-fidelity was first becoming popular. The original Model Five was the perfect mix of size and performance and lead to un-heard of success in the speaker industry which is rarely experienced today.

The challenge with any small enclosure is optimizing the positioning of the vintage loudspeaker, regardless of whether the listener is sitting or standing. The slant riser base raises the floorstanding speaker to the perfect height, and the 5-degree slant-angle positions it at the proper angle to ensure the best vertical coverage for all listening positions.

The KLH M5s are intoxication kings, urging me to hear my most beloved vinyl via its big personality and well-scaled dimensionality.”

“Mostly, the speaker played with a detailed, sparkling upper/mid/treble chutzpah that favored and seemed to amplify texture and viscosity. Notes had realistic weight and body. These Model Fives are attention-getters of the first order, delivering a big soundstage and big, juicy dynamics.”

I find the clarity of this loudspeaker so incredibly addictive Nuance and control is the name of the game here. The Model Five’s coherence top to bottom is fantastic. The soundstage is fantastic, this speaker can image with the best of them- bordering on holographic at times. Soundstage width is epic, the detail out along the edges is so impressive. This is not a loudspeaker you have to pull out from the wall in order to enjoy good soundstage depth. The dispersion in center imaging of this speaker is so good in fact that even in stereo the Model Five proved to be one of the finer home theater solutions that we have ever had in this house and on this channel. I really don’t have anything negative to say about the KLH’s sound.

Andrew Robinson

“When I first sat down to listen to the Model Five I started listening at around 8 pm and I couldn’t stop listening until 2 am. I couldn’t stop! I wanted to break away and do other things but I was just like one more album, one more album… I was having a ball.”

“On one hand it’s so refreshing to come across something that I feel is so musically engaging that it reconnects me to why I became an audiophile to begin with. And yet… when you find that as a reviewer it makes it very difficult to want to review anything else… I know that most of them [other speakers] probably are not going to connect me with the music the way that the Model Five has. That is why they are my favorite speakers in their price class. Given the competition, I think KLH has the most well-rounded option for someone who wants that kind of retro look but more of a well-rounded listening experience.”
